Day 08: Most overrated book

[A Game of Thrones, George R R Martin]A Game of Thrones, George R R Martin

a-game-of-thrones

I feel bad for saying this. I know for some people this is their Lord of the Rings, the book they will defend to all the haters by screaming YOU ARE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT! It might make me a bad fantasy fan. But I hate this book.

I read it a while ago, long before the t.v show started, and I didn't even finish it. I hated how often the perspective between characters changed, all the characters were either unlikable or dull, and the whole forced child marriage thing made me really uncomfortable.

Maybe I'll try it again someday, or at least borrow the dvds from my brother.

But for now, I will carry on hating this book.

Sorry.

So I have decided not to buy any new games until October when DA:I and Shadow of Mordor come out, and to use the time to complete the unfinished games I already own (White Knight Chronicles 2, Diablo 3, Final Fantasy X/X-2 hd remake and 100% completion of the Lego Hobbit game).

However I keep going back to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. It’s so bright and colourful, the combat is really fun and I love the story. I’m forever sad that it is an orphaned IP - the flaws it has could have easily been fixed in a sequel.

This is my character, anyway, a ljosalfar jack-of-all-trades called Wren. I kind of ship her in an OT3 with Agarth and Gwyn Anwy (and I am aware that those two don’t actually meet in the game but whatever, headcanon). I am trying to use the finesse skills more in this playthrough as I usually rely heavily on might and magic.

Writing prompts and FFX

Considering that I always used to hate Soul Mate AUs I certainly seem to be writing a lot of them! I have just finished my Hobbit Big Bang and am working on a sequel (its working title is Five Times Kili helped dwarves make sense to Bilbo and one time Bilbo returned the favour about elves) but I'll probably go with something snappier for the actual thing.

I've also signed up for the lewis_challenge summer event in which I am very tempted to do a "everything is in black and white until you see your soulmate for the first time" fic (there are some gorgeous gifs on tumblr from different fandoms) where Hathaway starts seeing in colour the moment he picks up Lewis from the airport and Lewis gradually starts seeing in colour again throughout the rest of the series.

I have also nominated rarepairfest pairings - some of them so rare I am the only person on A03 who has written for them! I would just really, really like more Kingdoms of Amalur and Dragon's Dogma fic, so hopefully someone out there agrees with me. Also some other hobbit ones as well so we'll see what I get.

I also want to finish up my 'Bilbo is Smaug's son' fic at some point, so at least I have a lot of writing to do!

Meanwhile, I have been playing the HD remake of Final Fantasy X which I am loving - however I am pretty sure they have changed some of the music and I don't know how I feel about that. Also, it makes me glad that most games let you save anywhere these days. Save points suck. However this makes me feel old as I remember when being able to save your game was a huge innovation! I've got my fingers crossed for a Final Fantasy XII remake now!

And E3 is coming up! I have my fingers crossed for some Dragon Age and Kingdom Hearts news.

Things We Grow Together

Title: Things We Grow Together
Fandom: The Hobbit
Characters/Pairing: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, Bungo Baggins/Belladonna Baggins, Kili/Tauriel
Rating: T
Word count: 12,261
Summary: Dwarves are born with a bone-deep knowledge of their One, but Thorin stops feeling the pull of his after the dragon attacks Erebor. Needless to say, he is surprised, and not initially pleased, to find his One living behind a round green door decades later.

Hobbits find a seed that represents their innermost self and can offer it to someone else to plant. This creates a bond as strong as deep roots in the earth between them. It is just like Bilbo, after years of thinking that no one would want his, to offer his soul-seed to a dwarf that does not understand gardening metaphors, though.

But just because they have found each other does not make the quest to reclaim Erebor any easier, and in the end a sacrifice is still made.

Thorin has to trust in the strength of the bond between himself and his One, because otherwise he will never believe that the sacrifice was worth it.

Art Masterpost: by Caylren, here. Please check it out, it is utterly beautiful!

Thank you also to synchroshatter for the excellent beta reading!

I'd like to ask a favour...

If anyone has any free time, I am looking for someone to beta-read my Hobbit Big Bang fic. I am almost, almost finished with it (a chapter and a half left to go, I am hoping to be done by Thursday!). It is a Thorin/Bilbo soulmate AU set in a happily-ever-after (though still with some angst before they get there) universe and I expect it to be around 9000 words. My posting date is the 25th May.

Thank you!

Lego Hobbit

Things I love about the Lego Hobbit game:

cut for spoilersCollapse )

If you have played a Lego game before then you pretty much know what to expect but I love the warmth and humour of the game. Combined with the original score and beautiful graphics (even though it is made of Lego, Middle Earth is still beautiful) it really is an enjoyable game!

30 Day Book Meme: Day 07

Day 07: Most underrated book

[The Riyria Revelations, Michael J Sullivan]The Riyria Revelations, Michael J Sullivan

Sullivan-RiyriaRevelationsUK_thumb[1]

Why does no one else love these books? My crappy fic is the only one AO3, anyway. The two main characters are Hadrian Blackwater, a talented warrior looking for a reason to fight, and Royce Melborn, an untrusting thief who sees good and evil in terms of 'things I want' and 'things in my way'. Together they fight commit crime! But very specific Robin Hood sort of crimes against nobility and other people who deserve it. But when they get caught up in an assassination plot against the king, their lives change forever.

The heart of these books are Hadrian and Royce's friendship. Hadrian is one of the very few people Royce trusts, and Royce helps ground Hadrian when he starts acting too noble for his own good. The books are full of friendship moments (which I love more than anything), banter and adventure.

The books are not perfect by any means; Hadrian and Royce's friendship is so well developed that it doesn't leave much room for other relationships (Royce's romance happens almost entirely off screen though that is corrected in the prequel books) and they do fall into that annoying fantasy trope of all important female characters being either prostitutes or nobility (born as or raised to). However, these books deserve so much more love then they get.

There is a free short story available on audible, and an even shorter free story
available on kindle if anyone fancies checking them out. And you really should!

Day 06: A book that makes you sad

[Tess of the D'Ubervilles, Thomas Hardy]Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy

32261

This book makes me sad for three reasons:

1) Tess overcame so much crap and then fell at the last moment, was executed, then her true love married her sister and this is presented as a good thing.
2) Everything she suffered was ultimately meaningless as her family wasn't actually related to the D'Urbervilles.
3) It was my English teacher's favourite book so I had to study it at both GCSE and A Level.
